About Her Justice

Our mission

Her Justice stands with women living in poverty in New York City by recruiting and mentoring volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help, and by addressing individual and systemic legal barriers.

Who we serve

Her Justice reaches women in all five boroughs of New York City

Our wide network of contacts at legal and social services agencies, hospitals and clinics, the courts and police precincts, churches and shelters, helps to spread the word about Her Justice’s free legal services in family, divorce and immigration law.

25% of the families we serve live in the Bronx

The Bronx is the City’s poorest borough and the poorest urban county in the United States.

27% of our clients live in Queens

Queens is the most ethnically diverse county in the entire United States. Nearly half of the people who live in Queens were born in a foreign country—and collectively speak more than 160 languages.

Hispanic women account for 54% of our clients and 25% are African-American

One out of every four women we serve speaks a language other than English and cannot access the legal system without an interpreter.

80% of our clients are survivors of domestic violence

64% of our clients are mothers
